The study of history at Hob Hill Primary School has been developed with our school motto of ‘Flourish and Achieve as Unique Creations of God’ as its guiding principle. At Hob Hill, our children experience English through high quality, diverse texts, carefully selected to align with the wider curriculum. Through the study of a wide range of children's literature, pupils develop their skills as writers, readers and orators. Through their engagement with texts, pupils are taught to empathise with characters, consider alternative endings, question plot twists and discuss the author's choice of vocabulary. In their own written composition, pupils apply their knowledge of sentence structure and vocabulary to compose written work for a range of purposes: to entertain and inform in KS1, progressing to persuasion and discussion in KS2.

We teach phonics and early reading using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme; this is a systematic synthetic phonics programme which has been validated by the Department for Education.
Visit our Phonics and Early Reading page for more in-depth information.
We teach spelling rules using the teaching sequence from the Spelling Shed scheme. All pupils have a login to practise spellings online, at home & in school. Logins are individual to pupils and are shared by class teachers.
We teach handwriting using the teaching sequence from Letterjoin.
All children have access to Letterjoin on home devices so can practise letter formation. Our school's login details are shared with parents.
Pupils progress from printed letter formation in Reception and Year 1 to cursive handwriting in Year 2 upwards.
At Hob Hill, our pupils love to develop their writing skills alongside their learning in the wider curriculum. Inspired by high-quality texts and visual literacy, they learn how to write for specific purposes. Below is a sample of of some of their fabulous work based on the classic tale of Sinbad the Sailor, Simon Chapman's Expedition Diaries in the rainforests of Borneo and The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.
Huge congratulations go to James Peters in Sycamore Class for winning first prize in Lichfield Festival's Green Journeys writing competition. We are so proud of James and his fantastic story!

Summer Reading Challenge 2023
Congratulations to all of our many pupils who completed this year's Summer Reading Challenge!
It gives us enormous pleasure to introduce our very first cohort of Hob Hill Reading Ambassadors! These children – selected from Year 5 - will be involved in helping Mrs O’Hagan to promote a love of reading across the school throughout the year. Some of them have already helped to deliver an assembly for National Poetry Day and they will be involved in many other events across the school year.
PTFA Little Library
A huge thank you to our wonderful PTFA members who have repurposed a rabbit hutch as a home for lovely books! There is something for everyone inside so why not take a book and leave a book next time you come into school.
